If you’re installing backer board over an existing subfloor, 1/4 inch is. For concrete floors 7/32″ (2.5mm), and for timber floors 1/8. For floor tiling i would use a 8mm trowel depth with a flat back spread of 2mm on the tile to provide a solid bed fix method of tiling advised for floors.
