The storm trysail is tacked eight feet or so above the deck so that a boarding sea doesnt tangle with the boom and bunched up sail.

With a separate storm trysail track and slugs or slides rather than a bolt rope the sail can be kept in a bag hanked on at the base of the mast ready to hoist.
