It is important to loosen the soil before planting new sod because it reduces compaction and makes it easier for the roots to grow into the soil.

Preparing clay soil for sod. Loosen the top 6 to 8 inches of soil with a rototiller. Compress the soil surface slightly. Start with a straight sided jar, fill it half way with soil, set it down and take a picture of the jar with a ruler next to it to measure the height of the soil.

Tighten the lid, and give it a good shake for a couple of minutes. To successfully grow grass in clay soil, start by breaking up the tough soil with a tiller. Test the topsoil ph with a chemical soil test to determine if changes are necessary.

If it stays together, you have successfully. Lightly moisten the soil and then lay the fresh sod. Apply recommended soil amendments and fertilizers at this time.

Dig the prepared organic matter into the top layer of your clay soil, but be careful not to compact it. Step 3 of preparing the soil for sod is to remove all existing vegetation from the lawn area. If it crumbles, add more vermiculite or peat moss.

Collect a handful of the soil and remove any lumps, rocks, roots, etc. To test your soil's ability to retain water, try squeezing some damp soil in your hand. Just as important as soil depth is soil quality.

Once your sod has been installed, be sure to water the lawn thoroughly to help the soil settle. Water your sod every day in the beginning. Proper soil preparation is important for the successful establishment of your new lawn.
