In 1946 the monarchy was abolished and the Kingdom of Italy became the Italian Republic whereupon the name of the air force changed to Aeronautica Militare. Their long range master was the Kawanishi H8K Type 2 a high performance four-engined bomber reconnaissance and transport aircraft code named Emily by the Allies. As usual in that time the wings and tailplanes were covered with fabric.
