A long CE but can still travel this vector.
How can a yacht travel faster than the wind. Thats not because theres no apparent wind. As mentioned elsewhere some planing dinghies catamarans foils borne craft windsurfers etc can travel significantly faster than the true wind speed but downwind. The apparent wind is the wind that the boat sails in.
Yachts that sail on ice or sand have a solid surface to push against and so can go even faster than boats on water. In 1 hour. Sailboats with a planing hull multihulls can go faster than wind.
You will feel 10 knots of wind on your face. Its because the apparent wind cant help the boat when its hitting flat against a big sail. The sails push backwards against the wind so the wind pushes forward on the sails.
If there is enough true wind combined with this apparent wind then significant force and power can be generated. A displacement vessel with sails set wing wing and or using a spinnaker can sail dead down wind up to. They can beat wind speed because they have a planing hull instead of a displacement hull making them a lot faster than average sailboats.
When the wind is at an angle we have to add vectors representing these velocities. Public domain But first lets start with the downwind case. They both require capturing the wind to create energy.
Once the boat reaches the same speed as the wind its impossible to go any faster. The wind is fasterthan the boat so the air is deceleratedby the sails. The sand yacht Greenbird holds the record for a wind.
