The 54 and 55 Evinrude Fleetwins have the Simplex Starter and are just plain hard to pull even when everything is set up correctly.

Evinrude outboard hard to start. Ensure that the fuel lines are free of kinks and leaks and the connections are all secure. Timing and synchronizing out of adjustment 10. Do NOT tilt the motor up out of the water.

Any help will be helpful. You may have to register before you can post. These motors can be hard to start unless the choke is staying fully closed while starting.

Your first step should be to raise your concern to the service manager of your dealership. Pump the primer bulb in the fuel line until it is hard. The 1991 Evinrude 30-HP outboard engine would bog down after getting up on plane.

Carburetor adjustments too lean not allowing enough fuel to start engine 9. Spark plugs improperly gapped dirty. If the engine stutters and dies or fails to start check to see if theres enough fuel in the tank.

Motor not being choked to start 7. It helps if you start the headline with your Evinrude outboard engine makemodel number or boat makemodel number. If your outboard motor doesnt start on the first or second pull then it needs a little tweaking.

Always pump up the fuel line first thing. Make sure it is closing the butterflies on the carbs. If your motor has the original brown wire core starter cord then there is virtually no stretch and that makes it a little tougher on the shoulder.
