Calcuttas 480 catamaran is available as a diesel-powered express with an enclosed bow or an outboard-powered pilothouse model with a walkaround deck layout.
Catamaran outboard engine. February 05 2015 090720 AM I have been on a 45m semi rigid cat with a single 60hp on it and it really battled it would need probably a 90hp to work properly. Unless you link the motor to steer when you turn the tillers docking under power is pretty challenging. The advantages are in the weight and cost savings of only having one engine instead of two and only one engine to maintain.
Wide stock of several make and executions of engines and parts stored in own warehouses. We suspect this step in the shape creates a disturbance and bubbles that the prop sees when in a full lock turn. I also see some discussions using only one larger outboard motor.
A 25hp outboard is plenty on the Strike trimarans and Chat18. Yamaha has a 25 hp high thrust as well. Making them a better choice for in-shore and off-shore family cruising.
There is still ample room for stowage of deck furniture. The diesel version has a semi tunnel hull that allows the propellers to effectively run with a reduced draft. I have heard for years that a single outboard motor doesnt work well in the open space between the hulls of a catamaran because there is too much water turbulence between the hulls causing propeller cavitation and in addition because there is too much drag from the propeller housing.
Smaller catamarans or lightweight ones can often get by with a single outboard. ArrowCat power catamaran boats are designed from the ground up to maximize comfort performance durability and fuel efficiency. As engine technology evolved applying power to sailing catamarans was a natural progression.
Typically for boats under 8m 26ft a 4-6hp outboard is enough always get a long or even extra long shaft. Fuel economy is excellent. The only real drawback is you get no free hot water via a calorifier attached to the diesel engine.
