We have a separate post with complete average speeds per type of catemaran.
Catamaran or monohull liveaboard. The advantage to these boats are shallow draft speed underway and a lot of liveaboard space. This gives each sleeping area complete privacy from the other. They used the space wisely.
Monohulls are more maneuverable have lower costs and better when sailing upwind. They are totally different boats. Most people would agree that the berths in a monohull are much more spacious than in a catamaran.
Speaking of comfort underway a catamaran vs a monohull will sail differently. A liveaboard catamaran for a couple should be around 42 to 45 feet. You have almost twice as much space as a monohull.
A catamaran is much better than a monohull in many ways. As an outside living space with a trampoline at one end and a massive aft deck at the other there is simply no comparison with a monohull of the same length. Most ocean capable catamarans are also more or less suited for living aboard.
Whether in a marina on a mooring or at an anchorage you can hoist sail and cast off totally under wind power. In short catamarans win hands down over monohulls when it comes to the size of the space youll be living in. The debate soldiers on in the CW forums.
Catamarans have no ballast in the keels like monohulls do and therefor it relies on beam and buoyancy for stability. Multihulls include catamarans two hulls and trimarans three hulls. Liveaboard monohull sailboats can be as self sufficient as you want them to be.
