This rest of this post is a look at the design of the boats and a look at the tech that make the boats fly foil.

Ac75 how does it work. The AC75 s 265m mast is stepped on a ball so that it rotates and it has a single set of spreaders and running backstays. Upwind the AC75 will need to build speed by coming off its optimal VMG upwind course for some time and may have to sail a reaching course to some degree Eventually speed will build and from a rig point of view while reaching sheets will be eased a little and come back on as the boat pops up. Heres how the radical 75ft foiling monohull will fly.

The spectacle of an AC75 at speed in flight is breathtaking but to learn to fly these boats at speeds that have rarely been achieved has meant that teams have had to climb a near vertical learning curve. The AC75 class rule splits the mainsail into three zones. This is the AC75 the class of boat that will contest the 36th Americas Cup in Auckland.

Watch the best of 13 races in the finals of the Prada Cup from Saturday 13th February to decide the challenger and from Friday 5th March for the Americas Cup itself on the 36th Americas Cup channel on YouTube. The AC75s are designed to be able to fly in as little wind as possible and as consistently as possible across the wind range up to the maximum of 23 knots allowable for the Americas Cup match.

The top four metres is known as the Upper Zone and the bottom 15metres is the Lower Zone. There is no heavy keel to help keep it upright like a traditional. With the AC75 sailing on its foil drag is dramatically reduced vast amounts of power can be generated and so speeds rapidly increase.
